From Breath to Being

Yoga & Meditation Retreat

Friday 29 October - Tuesday 2 November 2010

At the heart of our yoga practice is our body and our breath. Our sustained attention on our immediate felt experience and on the breath renews our yoga practice to keep it fresh, real, transformative and deeply meaningful. We will explore asana, pranayama, chanting, yoga nidra and meditation and follow where the breath leads us.

Our focus on the body will explore deep and natural alignment principles, discovering the innate connections we have within our body. We will combine a slow and mindful exploration of asana with flowing and inspiring yoga vinyasa (sequences).

The breath helps us explore the more subtle aspects of our practice as described in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, including pratyahara (turning inwards), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (our essential nature). As we give ourselves to the breath we can relax into who we really are and directly experience a natural ease and buoyancy in life.

When we embrace ourselves as who we really are, we can fully embrace Life itself. The breath connects us with our own essence, a ground of beingness that is naturally spacious, open and at ease with life. As we rest into this inner presence, an acceptance and celebration of life unfolds naturally.

This retreat is ideal for those who have some yoga experience and want to deepen their yoga practice. Students from all yoga styles are welcomed as we will be exploring an essence that underlies all forms of yoga. We will refresh our understanding of what yoga is - with an emphasis on the inner journey of yoga. This is an opportunity to find ways to apply yoga to how we actually live our daily life, finding not only our unique yoga path but our unique path in life. A deeply nourishing and inspiring retreat!

Yoga in the Heart Retreat

About the Retreat

A 7 Day Yoga & Meditation Retreat

Postponed until September 2011

A Retreat is an ideal way to nourish yourself and create space for your deepest life to unfold. The stunning landscape of the Outback has an ancient presence, a deep stillness and silence, that echoes the essence of our being. Yoga and meditation awaken our capacity to feel the vibrancy of nature and to recognize that the presence that surrounds us, is within us. A retreat helps us relax into the innate silence of our being and to find a natural ease in life. Inspiration, deeper meaning and joy in life then naturally follow.

This 7 Day Retreat will embrace and unite body, heart and mind as we explore yoga postures and flowing sequences, breathing (pranayama), yoga nidra, chanting, meditation and yoga teachings in a supportive and nurturing environment. We will explore the main components of a complete yoga practice and how to bring yoga into our daily life. Some yoga experience is neccessary and all practices will be adapted to suit different levels of experience. Indigenous guests will spend time wiith us sharing their culture. There will also be free time for walks, contemplation and to enjoy the beauty of the land. There will optional one-to-one discussion times with Anahata to support your inner journey.

Anahata has been practising yoga and meditation for twenty years and finds retreats an ideal way to deepen our experience of yoga and of life itself. See About Anahata for more information. Aruna Giri will also lead some meditation and self-inquiry sessions on the Retreat. Aruna's natural, warm approach and his peaceful presence inspires his meditation sessions. Practical Details

Venue & Accommodation & Meals

The retreat venue is The Hamilton Downs Youth Camp - a homestead with heritage listing, built between 1910-1923 located 75km north-west of Alice Springs. Set on the dry Jay Creek with the spectacular Chewings range as a backdrop, this is a true Outback setting.

We will be on the land of the Arrernte people and we acknowledge and respect the traditional owners of this land.

We will be immersed in the unique landscape of the Outback that resonates with an ancient and powerful presence. This is an ideal setting for a retreat. The geographical distance from built up areas, the silence and space of the land and the night sky draw us into deeper contact with the heart of Australia and with our own hearts. As we witness and experience this spectacular natural landscape we can explore our own inner landscape.

Our accommodation will be comfortable but simple, outback style, with shared toilet and shower facilities. For sleeping, you can choose to share in a bunkhouse or sleep in a tent or in a swag. A swag is a sturdy canvas bag that encloses a sleeping bag that enables the sleeper to lie directly under the stars. Sleeping in a swag under the stars is a truly memorable and magical experience (swags and bedding are provided). If the weather becomes inclement and you have chosen an outdoor option there will still be a bed for you in one of the bunkhouses.

There will be three delicious and healthy vegetarian meals a day, with the midday meal as the main meal. We will use organic produce where practical. Beverages, fruit and snacks will also be provided. If you have any dietary requirements please let us know on registration.

September is the best time of the year to visit the red centre as the winter frosts and very cold temperatures are over and the extremely hot weather has not begun.
